Scientists show large impact of controlling humidity on greenhouse gas emissions

Greenhouse gas emissions from air conditioners are expected to climb as economic growth drives efforts to control both temperature and humidity, according to an analysis by scientists from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Xerox PARC. The research, which explores the environmental impact of controlling humidity, appears in the journal Joule as "Humidity's impact on greenhouse gas emissions from air conditioning." While the energy used to power air conditioners has clear implications on greenhouse gas emissions, the impact from removing moisture from the air has escaped in-depth study until now. The researchers showed that controlling humidity is responsible for roughly  half of the energy-related emissions, with the other [...]

Surge into plastic recycling by chemicals and oil groups meets pushback

As per a recent article in Financial times, the surge by the world’s largest petrochemical and oil companies into plastic recycling as an industry “plan B” is in question, after a historic UN agreement to negotiate a legally binding treaty to tackle plastic pollution. Despite extensive lobbying efforts to narrow the proposal to deal with plastic waste management, the treaty signed by 175 countries could place equal onus on plastic makers to limit their production. By 2050, petrochemical production will account for nearly half of growth in global oil demand, according to estimates by the International Energy Agency. The industry needs solutions to [...]

Humanity Just Produced The Biggest Increase in Global CO2 Emissions Ever Recorded

As per an article published in Science Alert, global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions rose by 6 percent in 2021 to a record 36.3 billion metric tons, their highest ever level, the International Energy Agency said Tuesday. "The increase in global CO2 emissions of over 2 billion metric tons was the largest in history in absolute terms, more than offsetting the previous year's pandemic-induced decline," it said. It pointed to the widespread use of coal to power growth as the world economy rebounded from the COVID crisis. "The recovery of energy demand in 2021 was compounded by adverse weather and energy market conditions – notably the spikes [...]

Germany Brings Forward Goal of 100% Renewable Power to 2035 – Bloomberg

As per a recent article in Bloomberg, Germany plans to rapidly accelerate the expansion of wind and solar power, bringing forward a target to generate almost all the country’s electricity from renewable sources by 15 years to 2035.  The Economy Ministry, which also oversees energy and climate policy, proposed new legislation on Monday that aims to roughly triple the annual additions from onshore wind and solar facilities. Offshore wind capacity is set to more than double. Germany is launching a series of measures to diversify its energy sources away from Russia after Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. Germany relies on Russia for more [...]

350 PPM: Cool Net Zero Environment Research – Complete Report

Introduction: This report provides an introduction to one of the least-discussed aspects of climate change mitigation strategies - cooling. We focus in particular on how Cold Thermal Energy Storage (CTES) can help in the decarbonisation of the cooling and electricity sectors - amongst others - by decoupling the generation of cooling from its consumption. Electrochemical batteries can do a similar thing for electricity but not precisely this for cooling. Cooling is more important, energy-intensive and polluting than many appreciate. It’s vital to many aspects of people’s lives - preserving food, vaccines, etc. - but at the same time consumes about a [...]
