This is an era of plentiful, cheap, renewable energy, but the fossil fuel dinosaurs can’t admit it – The Guardian

For a couple of days this month, wind power supplied over half the UK’s electricity. You wouldn’t know it from our bills – or our politicians The first time wind energy emerged as a serious contender in the UK’s energy provision. It was 6 November 2012, and the country’s electricity use from wind hit an all-time high in the middle of the afternoon, at 9.3%. The casual observer wouldn’t have noticed, and the expert wouldn’t have been surprised, but for people between those poles, it was astonishing. Windfarms were then perceived as a nascent technology, so infant and speculative they needed endless subsidy, [...]

OFFSHORE WIND AND BESS TAKE CENTRE STAGE IN NET ZERO DRIVE

The link below takes you to all the energy nodes across europe along with grid lines: See all the Energy Nodes Across Europe Click in ” Legend ” at 9 O’clock and you can see the voltage of the lines and the mosaic of power generation plants in operation and planned. Click on the white spots out at sea and these are the offshore wind farms. White spots on land are power generators or substations. Checked Lines are gridlines in development. What does this all tell us? There is a huge huge volume of offshore wind being introduced. WEGS are no longer 1 MW from [...]

Wind power sets new UK record

More than half of the country's electricity came from this source with 21.6GW generated National Grid ESO has confirmed that wind provided more than half of the UK's power on 10th January 2023, setting a new record, according to RenewableUK.  Wind generated 21.6GW of electricity in the half-hour period between 6-6.30pm, providing 50.4% of the UK’s power. This beats the previous record of 20.9GW set on 30 December, which was the third wind energy record set last year. RenewableUK has been tracking the massive amount of electricity being produced by low carbon sources (renewables and nuclear) throughout the winter and tweeting updates every fortnight. Its latest wind power [...]

‘New dynamic in expansion’. Germany adds nearly 10GW of wind and solar in 2022

Europe’s largest economy installs 7.2GW of new solar and 2GW of onshore wind – but additions still too low to reach 2030 targets Germany added close to 10GW in new net onshore wind and solar capacity last year, which brought a “new dynamic in the expansion of renewable energies” amid a flurry of legislative changes to speed up deployment, the country’s economics and climate ministry said. Net solar PV additions are expected to have risen by 26% to 7.2GW in 2022, according to preliminary figures, the ministry said in an overview paper, pushing cumulative solar capacity in Europe’s largest economy beyond 65GW. For [...]

350 PPM News: O-Hx releases Series A video and Megawatt Mosaic Pre-Launch Expressions of Interest Now Active

Organic Heat Exchangers have released their Series A video, which is now live on their blog. View Video Here O-Hx was the first company that we funded under 350 PPM’s new Marine Corp initiative. This is where the whole PPM team parachute into the target business, adding additional skill sets in fields away from standard engineering, and most importantly, allowing them to get on with their business, while we do the rest.  Organic Heat Exchangers, with its hybrid cooling and energy storage system, Energivault®, is looking like another winner. Priced at 32p per share in the Series A round creates a paper profit [...]

Global summit is ‘last chance’ for nature

Next month's UN biodiversity summit is the "best and last chance" to halt and reverse the decline of nature, the head of Natural England has said. In December nearly 200 countries will meet in Montreal, Canada, to agree a landmark deal to safeguard nature. The chair of the government nature agency, Natural England, said countries must come together and agree an ambitious plan. "This isn't just about saving rare species," said Tony Juniper. "It's about sustaining the web of life upon which humankind ultimately depends, for food, water, health and climate regulation." On Wednesday, Natural England and other government agencies are setting out their vision [...]

Climate Investment Opportunities Total $23 Trillion in Emerging Markets by 2030, Says Report

Since the Paris Agreement was adopted in December 2015, a total of 189 countries have submitted their national plans that target aggressive growth in climate solutions—including renewable energy, low-carbon cities, energy efficiency, sustainable forest management, and climate-smart agriculture. These plans, called Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), offer a clear roadmap for investments that will target climate-resilient infrastructure and offset higher upfront costs through efficiency gains and fuel savings. An IFC report launched in November shows that the historic global agreement on climate change adopted in Paris helped open up nearly $23 trillion in opportunities for climate-smart investments in emerging markets between now and 2030. IFC’s [...]

Global carbon emissions hit record despite China slowdown

Global carbon dioxide emissions will hit a record high this year, in spite of a drop in China’s emissions, as the world increased its coal use and economic activity continued to pick up post-coronavirus. Carbon dioxide emissions from energy will rise 1 per cent to reach 37.5bn tonnes in 2022 — with the biggest increases coming from India and the US, according to new data from the Global Carbon Project, a coalition of international climate science bodies. The sudden drop in emissions in China, the world’s biggest polluter, will be more than offset by the surging emissions in the rest [...]

British wind farms set new 21GW generation record – reNews

Wind farms across Britain have set a second power generation record within the space of a week, producing 20,896MW of electricity on Wednesday 2 November. National Grid ESO said the milestone was achieved during a 30-minute period around noon when wind farms accounted for 53% of Britain’s electricity. On the same day, low-carbon sources – wind, solar, nuclear, hydro and storage – provided 70% of the country’s electricity. It comes just seven days after a previous record was set by onshore and offshore wind projects, when 19,936MW was generated over a half-hour period. RenewableUK chief executive Dan McGrail said: “Generating more than 20GW of [...]

Carbon emissions from energy to peak in 2025 in ‘historic turning point’, says IEA – The Guardian

Global carbon emissions from energy will peak in 2025 thanks to massively increased government spending on clean fuels in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to analysis by the world’s leading energy organisation. The International Energy Agency (IEA) said that government spending on clean energy in response to the crisis would mark a “historic turning point” in the transition away from fossil fuels, in its annual report on global energy. The invasion of Ukraine has prompted an energy crisis around the world, with global gas prices initially surging. The crisis has caused steep inflation that has made households poorer around the world. Governments have been scrambling to [...]
