350 PPM: Cool Net Zero Environment Research Report Part 1

Introduction: This report provides an introduction to one of the least-discussed aspects of climate change mitigation strategies - cooling. We focus in particular on how Cold Thermal Energy Storage (CTES) can help in the decarbonisation of the cooling and electricity sectors - amongst others - by decoupling the generation of cooling from its consumption. Electrochemical batteries can do a similar thing for electricity but not precisely this for cooling. Cooling is more important, energy-intensive and polluting than many appreciate. It’s vital to many aspects of people’s lives - preserving food, vaccines, etc. - but at the same time consumes about a [...]

Carbon trading gets a green light from the U.N., and Brazil hopes to earn billions

Carbon emissions trading is poised to go global, and billions of dollars — maybe even trillions — could be at stake. That's thanks to last month's U.N. climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland, which approved a new international trading system where companies pay for cuts in greenhouse gas emissions somewhere else, rather than doing it themselves. In theory, it's a more efficient way to fight climate change, paying for clean energy or forest preservation in countries that lack the resources to do it on their own. "Those financial flows are so crucial to climate action," says Kelley Kizzier, vice president for global climate at the Environmental Defense [...]

Legal experts worldwide draw up ‘historic’ definition of ecocide

Draft law is intended to prosecute offences against the environment As per a recent article in the Gaurdian, Legal experts from across the globe have drawn up a “historic” definition of ecocide, intended to be adopted by the international criminal court to prosecute the most egregious offences against the environment. The draft law, unveiled on Tuesday, defines ecocide as “unlawful or wanton acts committed with knowledge that there is a substantial likelihood of severe and widespread or long-term damage to the environment being caused by those acts”. The Stop Ecocide Foundation initiative comes amid concerns that not enough is being done to tackle [...]

Europe must plan ‘multi-billion-euro’ hydrogen grid now to tap North Sea wind: Siemens Gamesa

New infrastructure needed if Europe to reap full rewards of future multi-gigawatt offshore H2 production, says innovation chief Poul Skjærbæk As per Recharger News, Europe urgently needs to start planning a “multi-billion euro” distribution network fit for green hydrogen produced offshore if it wants it to play a major role in decarbonisation, said one of the leading figures developing wind technology for renewable H2 as he called on the EU to take a lead role. Poul Skjærbæk, chief innovation and product officer at Siemens Gamesa, said that while work on the technical challenges of integrating electrolysers and offshore wind turbines is already well [...]

Hydrostor plans 400 MW / 3200 MWh compressed air energy storage in the U.S – PV Magazine

The plant would be able to deliver 400 MW of electricity for 8 hours, and would be comparable in size to some of California’s largest fossil fuel power plants. PV Magazine in US has revealed that an affiliate of Hydrostor filed an application for a 400 MW / 3200 MWh long duration energy storage (LDES) project with the California Energy Commission (CEC). Hydrostor deploys compressed air energy storage, a technology that is able to store and dispatch energy for long durations. As the region’s 2,200 MW Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant is set to retire in 2024/2025, the LDES project has a target for commercial operation date as early as [...]

No way around hydrogen’ says RWE CEO, as firm lays out plans to invest billions in renewables

Hydrogen has a key role to play in the years ahead, especially in industrial applications, according to the CEO of German power company RWE. “When you look long term, there is no way around hydrogen,” Markus Krebber, who was speaking to CNBC’s Annette Weisbach, said. In an interview broadcast Tuesday morning, Krebber claimed this was because hydrogen was “the only technology … we currently know which is able to decarbonize those industries which cannot electrify like steel, but also some parts of the chemical industry.” Described by the International Energy Agency as a “versatile energy carrier,” hydrogen has a diverse range of applications and can [...]
