Global summit is ‘last chance’ for nature

Next month's UN biodiversity summit is the "best and last chance" to halt and reverse the decline of nature, the head of Natural England has said. In December nearly 200 countries will meet in Montreal, Canada, to agree a landmark deal to safeguard nature. The chair of the government nature agency, Natural England, said countries must come together and agree an ambitious plan. "This isn't just about saving rare species," said Tony Juniper. "It's about sustaining the web of life upon which humankind ultimately depends, for food, water, health and climate regulation." Climate Investment Opportunities Total $23 Trillion in Emerging Markets by 2030, Says Report

Since the Paris Agreement was adopted in December 2015, a total of 189 countries have submitted their national plans that target aggressive growth in climate solutions—including renewable energy, low-carbon cities, energy efficiency, sustainable forest management, and climate-smart agriculture. These plans, called Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), offer a clear roadmap for investments that will target climate-resilient infrastructure and offset higher upfront costs through efficiency gains and fuel savings. An IFC report launched in November shows that the historic global agreement on climate change adopted in Paris helped open up nearly $23 trillion in opportunities for climate-smart investments in emerging markets between now and 2030. IFC’s [...]

Global carbon emissions hit record despite China slowdown

Global carbon dioxide emissions will hit a record high this year, in spite of a drop in China’s emissions, as the world increased its coal use and economic activity continued to pick up post-coronavirus. Carbon dioxide emissions from energy will rise 1 per cent to reach 37.5bn tonnes in 2022 — with the biggest increases coming from India and the US, according to new data from the Global Carbon Project, a coalition of international climate science bodies. The sudden drop in emissions in China, the world’s biggest polluter, will be more than offset by the surging emissions in the rest [...]

British wind farms set new 21GW generation record – reNews

Wind farms across Britain have set a second power generation record within the space of a week, producing 20,896MW of electricity on Wednesday 2 November. National Grid ESO said the milestone was achieved during a 30-minute period around noon when wind farms accounted for 53% of Britain’s electricity. On the same day, low-carbon sources – wind, solar, nuclear, hydro and storage – provided 70% of the country’s electricity. It comes just seven days after a previous record was set by onshore and offshore wind projects, when 19,936MW was generated over a half-hour period. RenewableUK chief executive Dan McGrail said: “Generating more than 20GW of [...]

Carbon emissions from energy to peak in 2025 in ‘historic turning point’, says IEA – The Guardian

Global carbon emissions from energy will peak in 2025 thanks to massively increased government spending on clean fuels in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to analysis by the world’s leading energy organisation. The International Energy Agency (IEA) said that government spending on clean energy in response to the crisis would mark a “historic turning point” in the transition away from fossil fuels, in its annual report on global energy. The invasion of Ukraine has prompted an energy crisis around the world, with global gas prices initially surging. The crisis has caused steep inflation that has made households poorer around the world. Governments have been scrambling to [...]

World close to ‘irreversible’ climate breakdown, warn major studies – The Guardian

Key UN reports published in last two days warn urgent and collective action needed – as oil firms report astronomical profits. The climate crisis has reached a “really bleak moment”, one of the world’s leading climate scientists has said, after a slew of major reports laid bare how close the planet is to catastrophe. Collective action is needed by the world’s nations more now than at any point since the second world war to avoid climate tipping points, Prof Johan Rockström said, but geopolitical tensions are at a high. He said the world was coming “very, very close to irreversible changes … time [...]

IEA forecasts fossil fuel demand will peak this decade – FT

The International Energy Agency has said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine will accelerate a peak in the world’s consumption of fossil fuels, with gas demand now expected to join oil and coal in topping out near the end of this decade. Fatih Birol, head of the IEA, said the world was fast approaching a “pivotal moment in energy history” as demand for the fossil fuels that have underpinned the modern economy since the advent of the industrial evolution nears an inflection point. “After rapid growth in gas consumption in the last 10 years, we think the golden age of gas is [...]
