We joined the Rt Hon Chris Skidmore, Chair of the Climate Action Coalition, and Secretary Jennifer Morgan, Germany’s Special Envoy for International Climate Action for the online launch of the Climate Action Coalition today.
The Climate Action Coalition is a mission-driven initiative bringing together a global community of organisations committed to achieving our 2030 climate and nature goals.
Nick Henry, Founder & CEO of Climate Action, said: “I was delighted to launch the Climate Action Coalition at the Climate Innovation Forum alongside Chris Skidmore and John Kerry – two heavyweight champions in the fight against climate change. The Coalition is an exciting next step for Climate Action, as a year-round platform that focuses on bridging the implementation gap and turning ambition into action to achieve our 2030 climate and nature targets.”
Through a series of taskforces, reports, online roundtables and in-person events, the Coalition will focus on the real time delivery of the 2030 climate goals agreed at COP28, including the trebling of renewable energy, the doubling of energy efficiency measures, and the targets set across the Breakthrough Agenda.
The Climate Action Coalition was announced at the Climate Innovation Forum during London Climate Action Week 2024. Nick Henry, Founder and CEO of Climate Action and the Rt Hon Chris Skidmore, Chair of the Climate Action Coalition, took to the stage alongside Secretary John Kerry, former US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate who endorsed the “tremendous initiative” and highlighted the critical need for cross-sector and private sector partnerships to deliver climate action at speed and scale.
The Climate Action Coalition is a partnership between Climate Action and the Rt Hon Chris Skidmore OBE. Climate Action was established in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme in 2007 and runs a series of highly regarded, high-profile events bringing together climate leaders at key points in the global climate calendar. The Coalition will build on these, creating a year-round platform for members to connect, with focused taskforces and regular touchpoints to share insights and expertise to help deliver on our 2030 commitments. The Coalition is chaired by Chris Skidmore, the former UK Energy Minister who signed net zero into UK law in 2019.
2030 is a decisive milestone for global action against climate change. According to the Paris Agreement, GHG emissions must decline 43% by this deadline in order to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. COP28 in Dubai symbolised the halfway point to reaching this goal and saw national governments uniting on numerous pledges and committing to stronger action through a series of 2030 targets including the tripling of renewable energy capacity and doubling of energy efficiency improvements. In short, the next five years absolutely critical.
To keep 1.5C within reach, we must implement decisive action at speed and scale. We must work collaboratively to overcome siloes between government and business, we must share expertise across sectors and borders, and we must synergise the impacts of policy developments with climate solutions.
This is the purpose of the Climate Action Coalition, to mobilise collaborative progress. Convening organisations and stakeholders from across value chains and accelerating the delivery of our shared goals.
