{"id":31436,"date":"2022-10-30T15:16:08","date_gmt":"2022-10-30T15:16:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/350ppm.co.uk\/?p=31436"},"modified":"2022-10-30T15:16:08","modified_gmt":"2022-10-30T15:16:08","slug":"world-close-to-irreversible-climate-breakdown-warn-major-studies-the-guardian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/350ppm.co.uk\/blog\/world-close-to-irreversible-climate-breakdown-warn-major-studies-the-guardian\/","title":{"rendered":"World close to \u2018irreversible\u2019 climate breakdown, warn major studies &#8211; The Guardian"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><br>Key UN reports published in last two days warn urgent and collective action needed \u2013 as oil firms report astronomical profits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The climate crisis has reached a \u201creally bleak moment\u201d, one of the world\u2019s leading climate scientists has said, after a slew of major reports laid bare how close the planet is to catastrophe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collective action is needed by the world\u2019s nations more now than at any point since the second world war to avoid climate tipping points, Prof Johan Rockstr\u00f6m said, but geopolitical tensions are at a high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the world was coming \u201cvery, very close to irreversible changes \u2026 time is really running out very, very fast\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emissions must fall by about half by 2030 to meet the internationally agreed target of 1.5C of heating but are still rising, the reports showed \u2013 at a time when oil giants are making astronomical amounts of money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Thursday, Shell and TotalEnergies both&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2022\/oct\/27\/shell-doubles-its-profits-to-95bn\">doubled&nbsp;<\/a>their quarterly profits to about $10bn. Oil and gas giants have enjoyed soaring profits as post-Covid demand jumps and after Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine. The sector is expected to amass $4tn in 2022, strengthening calls for heavy windfall taxes to address the cost of living crisis and fund the clean energy transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All three of the key UN agencies have produced damning reports in the last two days. The UN environment agency\u2019s report found there was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/oct\/27\/climate-crisis-un-pathway-1-5-c\">\u201cno credible pathway to 1.5C in place\u201d<\/a>\u00a0and that \u201cwoefully inadequate\u201d progress on cutting carbon emissions means the only way to limit the worst impacts of the climate crisis is a \u201crapid transformation of societies\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Current pledges for action by 2030, even if delivered in full, would mean a rise in global heating of about 2.5C, a level that would condemn the world to catastrophic climate breakdown,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/oct\/26\/current-emissions-pledges-will-lead-to-catastrophic-climate-breakdown-says-un\">according to the UN\u2019s climate agency<\/a>. Only a handful of countries have ramped up their plans in the last year, despite having\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/nov\/15\/ratchets-phase-downs-and-a-fragile-agreement-how-cop26-played-out\">promised to do so at the Cop26 UN climate summit\u00a0<\/a>in Glasgow last November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/oct\/26\/atmospheric-levels-greenhouse-gases-record-high?CMP=share_btn_tw\">UN\u2019s meteorological agency reported<\/a>&nbsp;that all the main heating gases hit record highs in 2021, with an alarming surge in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/oct\/26\/eu-on-track-to-break-pledge-to-cut-methane-emissions-by-30-warns-report\">emissions of methane<\/a>, a potent greenhouse gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Separately, the IEA\u2019s world energy report offered a glimmer of progress, that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/oct\/27\/carbon-emissions-to-peak-in-2025-in-historic-turning-point-says-iea\">CO2 from fossil fuels could peak by 2025<\/a>&nbsp;as high energy prices push nations towards clean energy, though it warned that it would not be enough to avoid severe climate impacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-background\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/oct\/27\/world-close-to-irreversible-climate-breakdown-warn-major-studies\" style=\"border-radius:8px;background-color:#106b22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Complete Article on The Guardian<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Key UN reports published in last two days warn urgent and collective action needed \u2013 as oil firms report astronomical profits.
