{"id":30982,"date":"2021-11-28T22:14:45","date_gmt":"2021-11-28T22:14:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/350ppm.co.uk\/?p=30982"},"modified":"2021-11-28T22:14:45","modified_gmt":"2021-11-28T22:14:45","slug":"uk-government-announces-biggest-investment-into-britains-tidal-power-press-release","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/350ppm.co.uk\/blog\/uk-government-announces-biggest-investment-into-britains-tidal-power-press-release\/","title":{"rendered":"UK government announces biggest investment into Britain\u2019s tidal power &#8211; Press Release"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The UK government is backing tidal energy as part of its flagship renewable energy auction scheme, announcing today its biggest investment in a generation into tidal power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a press release, it has been announced that the UK government will invest \u00a320 million per year in Tidal Stream electricity as part of its flagship renewable energy auction scheme, kickstarting a brand-new chapter for the tidal industry and creating jobs across the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will unlock the potential for a thriving UK tidal power sector, with the cash boost supporting marine technologies which could benefit the whole of the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the fourth allocation round of the Contracts for Difference Scheme due to open next month, the UK government will ensure that \u00a320 million per year will be ringfenced for Tidal Stream projects, giving the marine energy sector a chance to develop their technology and lower their costs in a similar way to the UK\u2019s world-leading offshore wind industry. This will bring the total funding for this allocation round to \u00a3285 million per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>History has illustrated the effectiveness of the scheme\u2019s design in keeping costs down &#8211; between the first allocation round in 2015 and the most recent round in 2019, the price per unit (MWh) of offshore wind fell by around 65%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over time marine technologies have the potential to significantly contribute to our decarbonisation commitments and could support hundreds of green jobs across the country, with projects currently in development in North-West Scotland, North Wales and the Southern coast of England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tidal energy has the potential to be a very reliable source of generation, given the clockwork predictability of the tides.
